Savotta Introduces New Plate Carrier Designed for Nordic Conditions

At this year’s Enforce Tac, Finnish equipment manufacturer Savotta highlighted its long-standing relationship with the defense sector while introducing a new plate carrier designed with Nordic operational conditions in mind.

Upon further conversation with Antti Peltoniemi, Sales Manager responsible for custom defense and law enforcement projects, BodyArmorNews uncovered how decades of experience supplying military equipment have shaped Savotta’s latest development.

Seven Decades of Military Equipment Development

Savotta marked its 70th anniversary last year, reflecting a long history that began in the outdoor equipment sector but quickly expanded into defense applications. The company’s cooperation with the Finnish military dates back more than six decades. “We’ve been cooperating with the Finnish defense forces since the early 1960s, so we have a pretty good track record of different kinds of military equipment,” Peltoniemi noted.

Over the years, Savotta has produced a wide variety of equipment, including tents, load-carrying systems, and other specialized military gear. Today, the company maintains both a civilian outdoor product line and a dedicated range of equipment for defense customers. This said, Peltoniemi emphasized that when it comes to professional clients, the company’s focus remains firmly on government and military users.

Functional Design Over “High-Speed” Features

Rather than chasing the latest tactical trends, Savotta focused on creating a practical and durable system built around proven design principles. A notable aspect of many of Savotta’s pieces is the ability to personalize your carrier depending on the function. Durability and modularity remain core design philosophies for the company.

“As everything else that we do, it’s extremely rugged,” Peltoniemi explained. “It does what it’s supposed to do.”

Designed for Extreme Environmental Conditions

Operating in Finland means equipment must function across a wide range of environmental conditions, from hot summer weather to deep winter cold. This environmental reality heavily influenced the plate carrier’s design. “Since we’re based in Finland, the conditions alternate between really hot during the summer and quite arctic conditions,” Peltoniemi stated. “Temperatures can drop to minus 40.”

To address this challenge, Savotta avoided seasonal configurations and instead created a system capable of operating year-round. The design allows users to manipulate equipment while wearing gloves, while materials were selected specifically for performance in freezing temperatures. “All the materials are chosen so that they also work in freezing temperatures, so they won’t break.”

Extensive Testing and User Feedback

Testing plays a major role in Savotta’s development process, with both internal evaluation and feedback from operational users contributing to product refinement. “We do lots of the testing ourselves, but of course the Finnish defense forces also give us feedback of their experiences with the equipment,” Peltoniemi said. The company also gathers feedback from a wide variety of users across different professions. “Everything we do… it’s in close cooperation with the end user or the customer.”

Modular Load-Carrying System

The new carrier is built around a modular architecture designed to accommodate a wide range of configurations. Standard purchases include the plate pockets and cummerbund, while additional components can be added depending on mission requirements. Optional accessories include groin protection, different placards, and side armor pouches. Savotta’s placard system allows compatibility with multiple magazine types. “You can put both AK magazines or AR magazines… there’s two different heights,” Peltoniemi explained, describing how the design accommodates varying magazine sizes. Users can also configure the carrier using third-party placards if desired. “Feel free to build it up as you please.”

Materials Built for Strength and Flexibility

One notable design feature is the skeletonized structural cummerbund, made from low-density polyethylene. “It’s flexible but it doesn’t break,” Peltoniemi said, noting that the material performs particularly well in cold temperatures. The design also supports additional load-bearing capability while maintaining structural rigidity. Behind the cummerbund, side armor pouches allow the integration of ballistic plates without unwanted rotation.

Plate Compatibility and Ballistic Options

The carrier is designed primarily around the standard 25 × 30 cm SAPI plate format, though it can accommodate non-standard plates through adjustable sizing. Savotta itself does not manufacture ballistic inserts, allowing users to select their preferred armor solutions. “We don’t manufacture the ballistics ourselves, but the end user can choose whichever plates he wants,” Peltoniemi said. Through its webshop, however, the company offers soft armor solutions in partnership with Helsinki-based Sioen Ballistics.

The newly introduced plate carrier represents only the first step in what Savotta expects to become a broader armor platform, of which future accessories are already under consideration. “This is just the start. It will become a product family of its own,” Peltoniemi said.

From Outdoor Heritage to Modern Soldier Systems

Savotta’s presence at Enforce Tac demonstrates how companies with roots in outdoor equipment manufacturing have evolved into significant suppliers to the defense sector.
With seven decades of experience and close cooperation with the Finnish military, the company continues to apply its core design philosophy: equipment that prioritizes durability, functionality, and reliability in extreme environments.
As Peltoniemi summarized, the goal remains straightforward: creating equipment that works when it matters most.
