DENISON, Texas — A federal agency is suggesting all first responders wear a bulletproof vest to keep safe.
FEMA is asking firefighters and emergency personnel to wear bulletproof vest.
FEMA says recent violence against law enforcement is why all first responders need this extra layer of protection.
“When you walk through the doors, you don’t know what you are walking into,” Denison Asst. Fire Chief Bill Ray said. “Police can’t go with us on every call that we go on.”
Denison Fire doesn’t have the vests yet but Ray says it could be something to consider.
“Recently in Missouri, a rookie firefighter showed up with a fire truck to a routine car fire and he was shot and killed in the incident,” Ray said.
Right now, only police officers are required to wear the bulletproof vest.
“We just want to be prepared for anything we may face, no matter what day it is or what is going on,” Denison Police Lt. Mike Eppler said.
Ray says crews are up against more than just flames and the vest would help protect them against things like explosions too.
“There are also more things that could hurt us besides gun fire,” Ray said.
Vests cost between $300-$3,000 and each individual department can decide if they want to buy them.
